04 Nov Who is Andy
My name is Andy Woods and I am one of the Directors here at Synium. I have always had an interest in computers since I got my first computer back in the 80’s – a Spectrum 48k – but I didn’t know I would have a career in IT until, at University, I realised computers were going to play a huge part in the world. I quickly switched from my Philosophy degree to Computer Science and it turned out to be a great decision.
I am originally from Wirral (near Liverpool) and relocated to the Midlands in 2000 when I took an IT position looking after the systems at a large College in Birmingham. This is where I met Simon (fellow Director at Synium) and Stuart (our Senior Tech) and the ‘Dream Team’ was born!
Many years later Synium was created and has evolved into the fantastic entity it is today.
I am happily married with two children and love the great outdoors and exploring the world, usually with my dog Buddy in tow. I love the UK, especially its peaks and coasts and frequently visit Wales, Devon and Cornwall for surfing or hiking trips with family and friends.
When out of the office I usually spend a bit of time at the gym, listening to audiobooks or cheering my kids on at their various sporting events.
What do you do now that you wished you’d started earlier in life
Eat less meat.
Do more towards saving the environment.
What are your 3 favourite movies (and why) in no particular order
Toy Story because no matter what sort of day you’re having this never fails to make me feel good.
The Pianist because no matter what sort of day you are having life is never going to be this bad!!
Pulp Fiction because it has everything – humour, grit and style. The way it has been written and the structure of the film is genius.
What is the thing that annoys you the most
Disrespectful people. You should always treat people how you would like to be treated yourself. I also wish people would take the climate threat more seriously.
If you had a day to yourself how would you spend it (money no issue)
Climbing Snowdon with my dog Buddy.
What is your favourite season (and why)
This is a difficult one as all of them are amazing in their own way. If I had to choose one though it would be Summer as it’s the best time to hit the coast and go surfing or paddle boarding.
If you could swap places with anyone for 1 day – who would it be – and why ?
Jurgen Klopp – so I could get up close to the entire Liverpool squad for a whole day.
If you could go back in time, what year would you go back to ?
1980, to save John Lennon from being shot.
What is the best thing you have bought in the last year for less than £100
My running trainers – they are just amazing and make me want to go the gym every time I put them on.
If you were to go for a meal with 4 people (dead or alive) – who would they be ?
David Attenborough / Louis Theroux / John Lennon / Jurgen Klopp
What book(s) have had a life-changing effect on you ?
The autobiographies of Steve Jobs, John Lennon and David Attenborough
Are you a morning person – or a night owl ?
Mornings are definitely the best time of the day no doubt so I guess that makes me a morning person.
What song (would you say) best sums you up ?
Good Vibrations by the Beach Boys
